2006 1Q mobile handset marketshare worldwide

The sales of mobile phone handsets around the world have grown 26% during the first quarter of 2006 when compared to 1Q 2005. An estimated 226.7 million mobile phones were sold during the 1st quarter according to the industry research firm IDC. Despite the big increase, Q1 2006 sales are slightly off 7% when compared to the 4th quarter of 2005.

Mobile market share figures and rankings for Q1, 2006:
1 - Nokia 33.1%
2 - Motorola 20.3%
3 - Samsung 12.8%
4 - LG 6.9%
5 - Sony Ericsson 5.9%

Motorola's new line of phones continue to put up strong numbers, and with the FCC approval of the Moto Q smartphone -- which provides some nice competition for the Treo 700 line, we expect to see gains in handset marketshare by Motorola over the coming quarters.

Sony Ericsson Mobile Security risk discovered

Several mobile phones made by the handset manufacturers Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications are said to be vulnerable to what is known as denial-of-service (DOS) attacks. The flaw has been found in four models of Sony Ericsson phones and is from an error in their Bluetooth service.

The Bluetooth technology is said to "fail to properly handle malformed L2CAP (Logical Link Control and Adaptation Layer Protocol)". Two different security technology firms have reported this flaw both stating that the potential security risk to mobile phone users is low.

Someone that is bound and determined to knock off one of the four Sony Ericsson phones, which includes the K600i and T68i, would only have to get within about 50 feet to get hit. Malicious code could then be sent to the mobile device that would crash the cellphone.
