Sprint drops over-the-air music to .99 cents

CTIA 2007 -- Sprint Nextel has just taken the music plunge, on song prices. In like fashion to Apple's famous Music store -- iTunes, they have lowered the price of over-the-air music downloads -- via the Sprint Music Store to .99 cents per song. This now matches the digital music leader Apple, and provides competition to ATT's up-and-coming iPhone launch. Sprint Music Store downloads were previously priced at $2.50 per song. This announcement comes in tandem with Sprint's release of the Samsung UpStage mobile phone-mp3 player. This also happened on the same day that as AT&T announced they would offer Free 'Napster To Go' on select handsets. Like before, the price is consistent across the 1.4 milliion songs in their music catalog. This also includes the bonus feature of allowing another copy of the song downloaded to a Windows personal computer.

To date Sprint customers have downloaded over 15 million songs.

Cingular, the nation's largest carrier, recently announced they have surpassed the 60 million+ subscriber mark.

Motorola links with TI for 3G | 4G mobile phones

Motorola has signed an agreement with Texas Instruments for chips to power future mobile phones. Previously Motorola has relied on silicon from Freescale, a company that Motorola spun off in 2003. Motorola has been a little slow in getting advanced 3G phones to the market -- but won't be left behind in 2007. From a financial perspective, this agreement won't help the bottom line much in 2007 -- Motorola handsets based on the new Texas Instruments chips will begin shipping in 2008.

TI's embedded chips will help launch both 3G and WiMAX (802.16e) data connectivity to major telecom players like Sprint Nextel. Motorola, along with Intel is one of the early adopters of next generation WiMAX and expects to begin shipping a new line of 802.16e mobile devices next year when Sprint is heavily rolling out 4G. Motorola Labs division is the force behind this recent announcement, continuing to push innovation in the wireless space.

Verizon Wireless supports Flash applications

adobe-flash-logo.jpg

Adobe Flash Lite features include:
Flash Player 7 support
Multi-Platform support
Dynamic XML data

Virgin Mobile launches ads for free airtime

Virgin Mobile USA will start swapping ads for airtime, similar to the concept Xero Mobile has been toutinng. This will be the first attempt to use ads by any of the major US Mobile carriers or MVNO's for that matter.

The Advertisements will be web-based streaming videos, SMS messages or questionnaires. It takes one 30-second video, two SMS messages or one minute anwering a questionnaire to get 1 minute of airtime. There is a maximum of 75 free minutes that can be earned towards an account each month. The advertiser lineup includes Microsoft’s Xbox, Pepsi-Cola, and the American Legacy Foundation.

Industry analysts still speculate -- Roger Entner with Ovum Research states: "The kinds of consumers willing to swap their time for airtime were not likely to be big spenders. If you’re too cheap to buy a minute of air time, how are you going to afford an Xbox?” Entner said. The people likely to earn minutes for free “are people who want to avoid costs at any cost.”

Nevertheless, Virgin's new dubbed "Sugarmama" is scheduled to be launched on June 14th.

GUI Skins, with several new themes
Multiple search engine selection from the homepage
Content download, image fetch, direct to phone

Speakerphone Built-in
128 × 160, 65K Color CSTN screen display

The initial service pricing for Helio is rather pricey, with the cheapest average consumer plan costing a whopping $85 a month for 1000 minutes. This price does include the highly touted "unlimited data access" and messaging. A pay as you go plan without all the bells and whistles that runs $40 a month for 500 minutes of talktime.

Visto files lawsuit against RIM

RIM is once again the brunt of more patent infringement litigation -- this time its Visto's turn. Visto, a provider of push email services has filed a lawsuit against Research In Motion for patent infringement on technology they claim to own. The suit filed today comes on the heals of the victory that Visto had last week against Seven Networks.

Research In Motion has been no stranger to lawsuits in the recent past -- the company just settled a $600 million suit for patent infringement earlier this year. The company's popular BlackBerry platform sports millions of customers in the US.

“Based on Visto’s sweeping victory in court against Seven Networks on Friday, RIM must understand that there is no place in the mobile email space for this sort of behavior,” continued Bogosian [Visto’s Chairman, President and CEO]. “Under the law, which protects consumers from products that contain infringing technology, RIM should not be able to sell the BlackBerry system.”

Cingular Wireless 1Q 2006 earnings

Cingular Wireless has reported first quarter earnings for 2006. The gross customer adds were flat when compared to 2005 Q1 results, but churn was down to the lowest level in company history. Cingular still remains the big dog in the US wireless carrier market with just shy of 56 million (55.8M officially reported) wireless subscribers. Cingular Wireless still holds the position of the largest carrier with Verizon nipping at their heels.

Key figures from 1Q, 2006 release:
1.9% churn, postpaid(direct customers) churn 1.6%
1.7 million net customer adds
$9.0 billion in revenue, up over 9%
354 million in net income during quarter
Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) was $48.48 -- down 2.3%

The biggest news impacting Cingular during the 1st quarter was the merger announcement between parents Bell South and AT&T. They plan to re-brand Cingular under the AT&T wireless name once the merger is finalized.

2006 1Q mobile handset marketshare worldwide

The sales of mobile phone handsets around the world have grown 26% during the first quarter of 2006 when compared to 1Q 2005. An estimated 226.7 million mobile phones were sold during the 1st quarter according to the industry research firm IDC. Despite the big increase, Q1 2006 sales are slightly off 7% when compared to the 4th quarter of 2005.

Mobile market share figures and rankings for Q1, 2006:
1 - Nokia 33.1%
2 - Motorola 20.3%
3 - Samsung 12.8%
4 - LG 6.9%
5 - Sony Ericsson 5.9%

Motorola's new line of phones continue to put up strong numbers, and with the FCC approval of the Moto Q smartphone -- which provides some nice competition for the Treo 700 line, we expect to see gains in handset marketshare by Motorola over the coming quarters.

motorola-q-verizon.jpg
After a launch delay, the FCC has finally approved the new Motorola Q handset. The Moto Q was originally suppose to be released for sale during Q1 -- but it now appears that it will be a 2Q debut on Verizon Wireless's network. We did not find any new disclosures in the FCC filing for this smarthphone (dubbed the Blackberry killer) but phone specifications have now been made official.

Moto Q handset features:
High-speed EV-DO data -- CDMA Network
Windows Mobile 5.0 OS
1.3 megapixel camera
RAZR thin design, .45" thick
miniSD slot
Bluetooth Wireless

The Moto Q will directly compete with the Blackberry, but most notably on Verizon's network will go head-to-head with the Treo 700w, which has currently not been released by any other CDMA carriers (Sprint).

Motorola ROKR E2 FCC approved

rokr-e2-1.jpg

Motorola's next rendition of the ROKR phone has just been approved by the FCC. The FCC documents disclose that they may include iTunes as part of the ROKR E2 featureset. When it was orginally announced, Motorola stated that the E2 had its own music player by built-in, but that it may also include support for different music or mp3 branded players -- based on wireless carrier's preference.

Motorola ROKR E2 includes:
QVGA screen display
SD card slot
Runs Motorola's new Linux bases OS
Bluetooth wireless
1.3 MP camera
The Motorola E2 is expected to be released for shipment late 2Q. No carrier partners have been announced for this phone yet, although we would presume Cingular would be at the top of the list.

Cable Co's set to launch wireless Sprint MVNO

Even though Sprint has voiced their intention to limit the number of MVNO partnership agreements, the largest cable companies in the US market are ready to launch their own company-branded mobile service on the Sprint Nextel nationwide network. The deal was originally unveiled last November, and involves the four cable companies Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox Communications and Brighthouse Networks. This announced partnership is a seperate initiative than the Sprint Enterprise Mobility subsidiary.

The deal Sprint Nextel has made in this joint effort will produce wireless products that feature special software -- cable customers controlling and programming their video recorders remotely, calling to landlines for free, and the ability to watch exclusive programming. Customers will also be able to merge their calendars, address books and voice mail accounts. Adding mobile wireless services to the current cable company offering will give a so-called quadruple play: cable, internet, wireline and wireless phone services.
