Virgin Mobile launches ads for free airtime

Virgin Mobile USA will start swapping ads for airtime, similar to the concept Xero Mobile has been toutinng. This will be the first attempt to use ads by any of the major US Mobile carriers or MVNO's for that matter.

The Advertisements will be web-based streaming videos, SMS messages or questionnaires. It takes one 30-second video, two SMS messages or one minute anwering a questionnaire to get 1 minute of airtime. There is a maximum of 75 free minutes that can be earned towards an account each month. The advertiser lineup includes Microsoft’s Xbox, Pepsi-Cola, and the American Legacy Foundation.

Industry analysts still speculate -- Roger Entner with Ovum Research states: "The kinds of consumers willing to swap their time for airtime were not likely to be big spenders. If you’re too cheap to buy a minute of air time, how are you going to afford an Xbox?” Entner said. The people likely to earn minutes for free “are people who want to avoid costs at any cost.”

Nevertheless, Virgin's new dubbed "Sugarmama" is scheduled to be launched on June 14th.

Promptu Mobile is not the only speech search technology company on the block, V-Enable a venture funded company is also vying for some marketshare in this space.

Google and ABC deliver Mobile News Content

We saw three big mobile media deals announced this week that will take advantage of the cellular phone market, mostly credited to the rollout of next generation 3G high-speed EVDO and UMTS networks across the U.S. The kicker to these deals will be how to generate enough money to pay for the release of new mobile content offerings.

Viacom will be one of the first to bring in some cash through the MTV Networks unit, which plans to sell video clips from its MTV, VH1, CMT and Comedy Central channels to Sprint customers. Many large companies plan to fund mobile content with ads to subsidize the development.

With Fox News Corporation's recent deal with Mobizzo it planned to sell games, ring tones and gadgets for mobile handsets. Mobizzo plans to aggressively distribute and produce content specially catered to the mobile market.

CBS also announced this week that they will launch a service dubbed News to Go Mobile Alerts that will send news in the form of short video clips on some cellphones. ESPN and NBC already offer similar service to CBS' media message launch.

Google and ABC have just announced that they have just made a deal to release mobile news by letting Google provide live daily webcasts of "World News Now" with top search term rankings each day. Internet capable cell phones users can also go to Google.com and search for ABC headline news with this deal.

As Google's Mobile strategy continues to rapidly evolve, you can catch some of the other Google mobile services that include Google Local for Mobile, a mobile mapping and driving directions software application along with Gmail Mobile, a homepage personalization option.

Major Brands will push ads on Cellphones

Large companies with major brands are planning to push ads to mobile phones at the rate of 89%, according to a recent study. Major wireless carriers like Sprint and Verizon have already been testing ads on cellphones.

The mobile marketing machine is prepping for a quick acceleration with major carriers ready to discount mobile content with ad subsidies. With the rapid rollout of 3G Ev-Do networks by Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless, they surely will not let this excess bandwidth go to waste. MVNO's are also jamming the door--ready to jump on the bandwagon of lucrative new market segment where mobile content and mobile tv will soon drive growth.

One study conducted by Airwide Solutions showed that by 2008, 89 percent of brands plan to use text and multimedia messaging to reach their audience. The amount budgeted for marketing with quickly accelerate from a small percentage of around 10% or less, to quickly over 50% of total marketing budgets aimed at mobile marketing.

MTV Networks' makes Mobile Moves

mobilemtv-logo.GIF
MTV Networks knows the importance of mobile video music content and services. MTV Networks already has under its belt access to 1.3 billion viewers on 120 channels in countries all over the world.

MTV, a division of Viacom who also owns the Nickelodeon children's network, Comedy Central, and dozens of other music and nonmusical channels, is trying to build viewers through the hottest new medium: mobile phone screens, also dubbed by some executives in the industry as "the 3rd screen".

MTV Networks has already signed a deal with Vodafone for access to over 700 million mobile phone subscribers, and now will just have to convince all those folks to pay for shows on a screen the size of a credit card. An existing alliance with Virgin Mobile is proving to be valuable experience in distributing and accessing Virgin Mobile content for MTV consumers.

With nine out of 10 mobile phone users located outside the U.S., Mobile TV content for global consumption is a big priority for MTV Networks. The key according to recent studies on mobile TV usage, is snack-size mobile content in chunks that a short attention span can chew.

The screen size and resolution means that there is a whole different way of creating video content, a whole way of directing it and producing it. That's why eventually most of the content will be originally produced for the cell phone.

New technologies that enable the rollout of next generation mobile TV networks are already in the works by the likes of Samsung with the SGH-P900 and Nokia's N92, with mobile carriers such as Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, Cingular, and & the mobile DVH-B consortium that was recently formed to develop a standard for wireless mobile TV.

IPWireless says Sprint will test Mobile Broadband LTE

ipwireless-logo.gif
sprint-logo-black.jpg
IPWireless revealed plans announced today that Sprint Nextel will be the 1st operator globally to start testing the next generation of IPWireless' mobile broadband technology known as LTE (Long Term Evolution). The official launch of the testing by Sprint will begin in March, 2006.
Recently here at mobilemodo we told you about the Sprint's plans in 2008 for Mobile TV along with a $10M investment that was made to assist IPWireless in developing next generation Mobile TV broadband capabilities.

The core LTE technology delivers peak speeds up to 29Mbps and will be tested as part of the ongoing UMTS TD-CDMA trials in Washington, D.C. metro. In essence, the next generation of UMTS TD-CDMA technology will allow a progression to the LTE standard from CDMA and TD-CDMA. The performance characteristics being designed include very high data rates that support very high speed mobility on an IP centric network.

"Having a common platform with Europe and Asia in the 2.5GHz band would bring a number of benefits," said Barry West, chief technology officer at Sprint Nextel. "The potential of IPWireless' solution to deliver a viable path to the Long Term Evolution of UMTS is relevant to our analysis of candidate technologies."

Sprint's goal of the IPWireless technology trials will be to test all of the subscriber services, including fast Internet broadband access for PDAs, laptops, handheld devices along with a wide spectrum of Wireless Interactive Multimedia Services like mobile video streaming, video conferencing, document collaboration and online gaming. The test will allow Sprint to fully test the gamut of products for both consumer and business users in correlation with mobile multimedia content partners.

Sprint plans to Upgrade Mobile TV in 2008

Sprint Nextel plans to unveil some Mobile TV goodness by rolling out a special network to handle mass scale media transmissions in 2008. Being the first major wireless phone carrier to deliver mobile TV over a cellular network, Sprint Nextel, says that they plan to launch a high-powered network for wireless mobile media services like TV and music over cell phones in 2008.

Sprint Nextel claims that although other competitors such as Verizon Wireless will make a noble attempt, Sprint's technology will be so powerful that it will have TV services that will be “two years in advance of the other U.S. carriers.”

While Sprint Nextel already has mobile TV over its third generation (3G) cellular network with MobiTV, demand will soon be outstripped by supply. Showing great interest in the development of next generation solutions, Sprint Nextel recently made a strategic investment with IPWireless to work on Mobile TV that is used on unpaired 3G spectrum.

All of these maneuvers will precipitate the move to what is being dubbed as "4G". Depending on the timing of the new rollout strategy for 4G, Sprint may also have to look into Qualcomm’s MediaFLO or Modeo’s DVB-H networks.

Cingular will test DiBcom Mobile TV DVB-H tech

DiBcom disclosed to RedHerring in an interview that Cingular Wireless will test its DVB-H (Mobile TV) based technology.

DVB-H is in a growing field of competing Mobile TV technologies that has the distinct advantage of being backed by mobile technology giants Intel, Nokia and Motorola. Nokia revealed that they will launch the N92 as the first DVB-H compatible handset.

Cingular has not openly commented on the test trials, but DiBcom commented:

Cingular just finished building the lab to test the chips in PDAs. The carrier will then test the chips in laptops and then in cell phones, said [DiBcom] spokesperson Agnes Hu, in an email. There are already several mobile TV standards in the works and it looks like each national US carrier may choose its own. Verizon Wireless is going ahead with MediaFLO and Sprint Nextel looks to be going towards TDtv. Current implementations simply stream the video data to each user over existing data networks and are not true broadcast mobile TV services.

Modeo is working on building the first DVB-H network in the U.S. and has not yet announced any mobile carrier partnership arrangements.
