Voce luxury wireless carrier launches service in L.A.

Voce, a trendy niche luxury mobile virtual network operator has just started offering its flagship service in Los Angeles. The soft launch event was by invitation only and was limited to 500 people. Voce's target wireless market segment is set at affluent consumers that are only interested in voice services.

The membership fee is $1,000 with a monthly service plan that is $400. The service is ala carte with no binding contract and unlimited airtime. There is no data component thanks to Voce's exclusive voice only MVNO agreement with Cingular.

One of the key services that Voce is providing is a 24-hour concierge service that is included in the monthly service price. Two handset devices will be available at launch, the Moto RAZR V3 in colors white, black, or texturized black leather and the snazzy Nokia 8801. Customers will be able to swap out for a new handset every year at no extra cost, and the phones are fully insured for those accidental plunges into the neighborhood pool.

blackberry-7130c.jpg
The FCC has just updated photos and specs of two new BlackBerry models yet to be released on their website. Both the Blackberry 7130c and 7130g are GSM/EDGE network compatible and will be headed for Cingular and T-Mobile. The basic design of the new BlackBerry units are slimmed down with a more rectangle shape than previously released handset models.

BlackBerry 7130 series features:
Quad-Band GSM with added EDGE
SureType keyboard support
64MB flash, 16MB RAM
Mini-USB port
Bluetooth Wireless 2.0 support

The maker of the Blackberry Unit, Research In Motion is now embroiled in another lawsuit -- this time around with Visto. The cards may not be in RIM's favor this time because Visto already settled a huge patent infringement suit earlier this year for a cool $600m.

Motorola L2 launched on Cingular Wireless

slvr-v280-2-motorola.jpg
As was expected, Cingular Wireless has launched the Motorola L2. This phone is still flying under the radar from normal consumer channels and is only available at this time for business and government employees. This frees up the SLVR as the primary option for wireless consumers. The Motorola L2 is basically a Moto SLVR L6 without all the bells and whistles, we like to call it SLVR-less. They have eliminated features that many businesses are now enacting corporate policies against -- cameras and music players.

Motorola L2 features include:
Bluetooth Wireless Support
Quad-band radio capable
Speakerphone Built-in
128 × 160, 65K Color CSTN screen display

Cingular is now selling the new Motorola L2 for $117 with a contract, if purchased through their Business to Business (B2B) sales channel.

Cingular Wireless 1Q 2006 earnings

Cingular Wireless has reported first quarter earnings for 2006. The gross customer adds were flat when compared to 2005 Q1 results, but churn was down to the lowest level in company history. Cingular still remains the big dog in the US wireless carrier market with just shy of 56 million (55.8M officially reported) wireless subscribers. Cingular Wireless still holds the position of the largest carrier with Verizon nipping at their heels.

Key figures from 1Q, 2006 release:
1.9% churn, postpaid(direct customers) churn 1.6%
1.7 million net customer adds
$9.0 billion in revenue, up over 9%
354 million in net income during quarter
Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) was $48.48 -- down 2.3%

The biggest news impacting Cingular during the 1st quarter was the merger announcement between parents Bell South and AT&T. They plan to re-brand Cingular under the AT&T wireless name once the merger is finalized.

Is XE Mobile MVNO, Sexy Mobile for College Students?

xe-mobile-razr-sexy.jpg

Another day another MVNO now ready to launch, this time it's not Xero Mobile -- but XE Mobile -- "Pay As You Go" wireless. The company plans to officially unveil their service at next week's huge CTIA event, but the XE mobile service can be bought now from the the XEMobile.com website. XE Mobile is selectively targeting the trendy market of "XE"(Sexy) college students and will use the Cingular Wireless nationwide network to host the new mobile wireless service.

XE Mobile is advertising their flagship launch handsets as the Motorola RAZR (not pink but silver), Motorola V180, Nokia 2600 and Nokia 3220. The rates are tiered by levels starting with "Easy Breezy" which is 20 cents incoming/outgoing and go down to 15 cents outgoing and 10 cents incoming on the higher tier airtime plans. You can also send outgoing text messages for 10 cents each, with all incoming text messages for free -- on all rate tiers.

Evidently XE is not having problems that Cool.Prepaid experienced recently with acquisition of Motorola RAZR phones -- they can be purchased for $299.99 through XE Mobile's website. The Motorola V180 is listed for $99.99, and Nokia 2600/3220 are $119.99 and $49.99 respectively.

Cool Prepaid MVNO launches with Moto Phones

cool-prepaid-mobile-mvno.jpg

Another MVNO announcement rocks the mobile world, this time it is Cool Mobile's cool.prepaid cellular service with Motorola Mobile phones. Cool Mobile's cool.Prepaid service is now entering a increasingly crowded market where recent announcements including market entrants Kajeet, XeroMobile, Amp'd(Amped), Disney Mobile, Helio, Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile, and ESPN. Unlike many of the other MVNO's, which seem to weigh heavy on Sprint's Network, Cool Mobile is using Cingular's nationwide network.

The list of phones that cool.prepaid has launched is impressive, but slanted towards a tight relationship with a popular consumer favorite -- Motorola. The choices include Motorola's C139, C261, V176 and V235. The Moto SLVR versions L2, L6, and L7 will also be available.

The selection will not be limited to Motorola phones, but with a SIM only solution being offered for international travelers who can buy unlocked GSM phones like the Sony Ericcson W800i. Since they are using Cingular's Wireless network, you will not be able to use phones that don't have the 850Mhz band, which almost completely knocks out many native European and Asian phones.

Motorola RAZR back on shelves at Cingular, T-Mobile

cingular-razr-back-on-shelves.bmp

We are happy to report that the previously yanked Motorola RAZR from Cingular and T-Mobile stores has been restored. The phones had been cleared from the shelves due to problems with dropped calls. Motorola quickly resolved the issue and resumed shipments, much to the chagrin of anxious customers waiting to get their hands on the pink razr.

Other news agents are also reporting that the phone is now being restocked. The minor disruption in the supply chain due to the glitch will probably not hurt sales for Motorola, the 2nd largest handset manufacturer in the world.

Motorola RAZR yanked from Cingular, T-Mobile USA

Cingular Wireless and T-Mobile USA have unexpectedly yanked the Motorola RAZR V3 from all their sales channels. Mobilemodo has confirmed that the ever-so-popular RAZR V3 model will not disappear for long, all colors (even pink) are expected to be released for shipment within the next week or two.

T-Mobile noted that they were having problems with an internal electronic component in a limited number of GSM RAZR handsets that were purchased in the weeks following February 1st. Motorola reps stated that the issue is related to mobile users experiencing dropped calls and a reboot of the phone (also affects free drivers motorola razr v3 users). Any customers with RAZR handsets that have experienced this problem should forget about waiting for your rebate check, and head straight to a T-Mobile or Cingular store to make an exchange.

Cingular is now showing the RAZR V3 as Out of Stock in the online store, and it appears that T-Mobile has yanked it from the website and store shelves altogether.

Cingular launches video service for cellphones

Cingular Wireless, the largest cell-phone carrier in the United States, is set to launch a new video service for two new phones. Subscribers will pay $20 a month for access to clips from the Cartoon Network, Fox News, NBC and others. The service will use Cingular’s high-speed data network, which is available in 16 cities.

For an extra $5 a month, 3-5 minute clips of HBO shows like the Sopranos will be available as well. Two phones, from Samsung and from LG, will go on sale Tuesday for the service. Each will cost $99 with a two-year contract. The service is similar to Verizon Wireless’ $15-a-month Vcast service, which launched in February last year in some markets.

Cingular and some other carriers already provide live TV on some handsets, using different technology called MobiTV. Cingular charges $20 a month for that service. Cingular is a joint venture of BellSouth Corp. and AT&T Inc. On Sunday, AT&T announced a deal to buy BellSouth for $67 million, which would give AT&T complete control of Cingular.

Cingular’s high-speed network is available in Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Boston; Chicago; Dallas; Houston; Las Vegas; Phoenix; Portland, Ore.; Salt Lake City; San Diego; San Francisco; San Jose, Calif.; Seattle; Tacoma, Wash.; and Washington, D.C.

HTC Wizard Unlocker code name - lokiwiz

htc-wizard-8125-unlocked.jpg

The forums are burning about a cool free program to unlock an HTC Wizard. Many hacker wanna bees have been hovering around just waiting to unleash the shackles off their Cingular backed 8125, or T-Mobile plugged MDA.

An XDA-Developers.com contributor has developed a wiz-bang software program called lokiwiz that will untether your Cingular HTC Wizard and free it from its SIM-locked shackles.

We don't currently have a locked HTC or MDA phone in our lab, but lokiwiz users are reporting a not-to-shabby -- 80% success rate of unlocking their HTC. This is not too bad considering their is currently no way to do this without locking into a big contract with T-Mobile or Cingular.

If you are still trying to get your hands on one of these phones you're still going to have to pony up a wad of cash without a contract on these phones. The prices still circulating are upwards of $450 without a signed carrier contract.

Cingular will test DiBcom Mobile TV DVB-H tech

DiBcom disclosed to RedHerring in an interview that Cingular Wireless will test its DVB-H (Mobile TV) based technology.

DVB-H is in a growing field of competing Mobile TV technologies that has the distinct advantage of being backed by mobile technology giants Intel, Nokia and Motorola. Nokia revealed that they will launch the N92 as the first DVB-H compatible handset.

Cingular has not openly commented on the test trials, but DiBcom commented:

Cingular just finished building the lab to test the chips in PDAs. The carrier will then test the chips in laptops and then in cell phones, said [DiBcom] spokesperson Agnes Hu, in an email. There are already several mobile TV standards in the works and it looks like each national US carrier may choose its own. Verizon Wireless is going ahead with MediaFLO and Sprint Nextel looks to be going towards TDtv. Current implementations simply stream the video data to each user over existing data networks and are not true broadcast mobile TV services.

Modeo is working on building the first DVB-H network in the U.S. and has not yet announced any mobile carrier partnership arrangements.

Pink RAZRs launched by T-Mobile, Cingular, Verizon

Cingular, Verizon, and T-Mobile have all recently launched their own variation of Motorola's popular Pink RAZR mobile phone. These mobile's are sure to catch your attention with the noticeable difference in color shade variation.

Let's take a look at the pink shaded RAZR differences:
3-pink-razrs.bmp

We think that Cingular's Pink RAZR is the best representation of what would get a true girly girl's top vote with an extra dose of cotton candy Barbie pink.

Verizon's light pink RAZR is not as bright and bold, and is sure to satisfy anyone that is searching for a mobile that is not overly distracting yet distinguished with personal style.

T-Mobile's RAZR mobile is not hardly pink at all, but is much closer to a boldly colored purple-like magenta. Grab this mobile if you really want to be noticed.

Sprint Nextel is noticeably absent from this list, and does not currently carry Motorola's RAZR mobile, but instead they carry the Samsung A900 phone as a RAZR alternative. The A900 mobile is currently only sold in black.

If you think these pink RAZR are great, just be prepared to drop down about $50 more than you would for the Silver colored RAZR.

FCC approves Nokia N80, 6282

The FCC just announced that they have approved two new Nokia mobile phones; the 6282 and N80 to be released in the United States.
n80-6282-fcc.jpg

When they were announced, both of the handsets included GSM 850/1900 and WCDMA 1900, but not WCDMA 850. Even though the Cingular Wireless logo is clearly shown on both of these models, the carrier will not be selling these models. Evidently, according to PhoneScoop they are reporting that after the FCC release, Cingular sent the phones back to Nokia asking for new versions of the phone that support GSM along with WCDMA 850/1900. If they make this change it will be released as Quad-band mobiles, N80/6282.

The featureset is still the same:
Quadband GSM capable
Thin sleek design
Bluetooth support
VGA Camera

The pink RAZR will be on sale from Cingular starting next week on February 6th, 2006 for $149.99. Cingular still stocks the black and silver colored RAZR phones for the same purchase price.

Cingular, Verizon, and now T-Mobile looking up

After Cingular reported earlier this week 1.8 million new subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2005, the other three largest U.S. cellular operators Thursday all reported nice increases.

In quarterly financial reports, T-Mobile USA reported 1.4 million new customers for the fourth quarter of 2005 and Verizon Wireless reported two million new subscribers. Sprint has stated they will release 4th Q results on Feb 22.
cingular-verizon-tmobile-sprintnextel-up.gif

The preliminary results of the quarter for all mobile carriers so far, means that Cingular remains the largest cellular carrier in the U.S. with 54.1 million subscribers. Verizon Wireless is in second place with more than 51 million mobile subscriptions followed closely by Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile a more distant fourth.

The fact that Verizon Wireless was able to keep pace with new subscribers topping 7.5 million in 2005, can't be underscored given that fact that they were impacted by the pullout from Radio Shack as reported earlier this month.

Cingular Wireless still beats Verizon mobile subscriptions

On Tuesday, Cingular Wireless announced that they added 1.8 million mobile cell phone subscribers in the 4th Q of '05, for a total of 54.1 cell phone users in the United States. Verizon Wireless continues to beat on Cingular's doorstep by adding 2 million new mobile cell phone subscriptions for a total of 51.3 million in the 4th Quarter.

Cumulatively, both Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless added over 12.5 million new subscribers in all of 2005, with Verizon on top with 7.5 million new mobile subscribers. This keeps both companies just a few steps ahead of Sprint Nextel, who has not yet reported results, and will be announcing 4th Quarter year end results on Feb. 22nd.

With Verizon's snazzy new phones like the CDM 8945, the the completion of the EvDO rollout this year, and the official launch of VCAST completed, it all adds up to a new year that is expected to put Verizon on top of the list.

Cingular.com has sold out of Motorola ROKR E1

Cingular is no longer listing the ROKR E1 mobile phone on their website because they have sold out. It has been reported that customers trying to access information about this phone have been unable to find ROKR E1 support documentation on the cingular.com website. Cingular has stated that they are in the process of restocking the phone. The customer reviews on ROKR E1 have been very poor since the product launched last year, so we here at mobilemodo were surprised to hear of the sell out.

ROKRE1-thumb.jpg

Alternatively, mobilemodo reporter stated that Amazon is still showing ROKR E1 phones listed, and available for purchase.

Motorola announced last week at the CES conference that the ROKR E2 would fix the problems customers were complaining about even though it will not include the iTunes feature.
